- Frequently Asked Questions on Coach Lewis
-
- Q. What is Coach Lewis?
-
- A. Coach Lewis is a structured procedure for drawing accurate
- (2D) Lewis diagrams. It takes the student through a step-
- by-step process to learn how molecules are put together.
-
- By following the Coach's step-by-step instructions a student
- can learn how molecules are put together.
-
-
- Q. What must the student know before using Coach Lewis?
-
- A. The student must tell Coach Lewis the chemical formula,
- the total charge, and the number of valence electrons for
- the structure being built. Then just follow the instructions.
- If a mistake is made, Coach Lewis can help the student by
- explaining the error and offering some options for continuing.
-
-
- Q. Coach Lewis seems like a complex way to build a 2D diagram.
-
- A. Coach Lewis is not a general purpose 2D diagram drawing tool!
- Coach Lewis is a structured learning tool. Follow the
- instructions exactly to build a Lewis diagram.
-
-
- Q. What is the approach taken in the Coach Lewis module?
-
- A. Coach Lewis is based on the algorithm given by:
- Olmsted & Williams in Chemistry: The Molecular Science
- (Mosby, 1994, pp. 329-344).
-
- It was felt that the more traditional "octet rule" approach
- had too many exceptions to be useful in the long run.
- Coach Lewis approaches the problem differently. It uses a
- Formal Charge approach to flag improper octets. It guarantees
- the correct result.
-
-
- Q. What is the difference between an interior and an exterior atom?
-
- A. In Coach Lewis, "exterior atoms" are bonded to only one other
- atom and "interior atoms" are bonded to more than one other
- atom. In the case of CH3OH, carbon and oxygen are "inner atoms"
- and all H's are exterior atoms.
-
-
- Q. Sometimes an instruction appears that doesn't seem to apply.
- What should I do?
-
- A. Simply hit the "Next Step" button to go on.
-
-
- Q. I am having difficulty placing bonding electrons.
- What should I do differently?
-
- A. Be sure to drop bonding electron pairs directly between the
- atom symbols you want to bond. Dropping them on or near an
- atom symbol may cause the pair to automatically arrange
- themselves around the atom symbol.
-
-
- Q. Non-bonding electrons are not going where I placed them.
- What should I do differently?
-
- A. Be sure to drop non-bonding electrons directly on top of the
- atom symbol. Dropping them above, below, or to the side of
- the atom symbol can cause the pair to simply return to where
- they started. Electron pairs placed directly on top of the
- atom symbol will automatically arrange themselves around the
- atom symbol.
-
-
- Q. Can I convert the completed Lewis diagram into a 3D model?
-
- A. Yes! Just hit the DONE button to exit Coach Lewis and place
- the structure back into the Page Viewer. Now hit the Cleanup
- button to optimize bond lengths, angles, torsions, inversions,
- and van der Waals interactions.
-
-
- Q. How can I control the 3D conformer that results from the
- Lewis module?
-
- A. Use the 3D Builder & Editor to make structural changes to the
- 3D model.
